A colourful mess

Not a long post today. I have been down with the flue for a second time within a month and did not have the energy to sit behind my computer or take photo's. I am feeling much better now, due to a lot of rest and antibiotics.

What a week it has been. My thoughts are with the people in France and especially the families who lost loved ones. Such a horrible thing to have happened.

I thought I would show you some photo's of my guestroom/workroom. It's a colourful mess really, but I love it. My vintage china and the spring bulbs look at their best in the morning sunlight.

I found a pretty dark blue tin recently, with exotic birds on each side. It's the best one I found in years. The hyacinth bulbs look perfect inside. The tall coffee cup with the violets is a new find too, as well as the coffee cup with the orchids. When I spotted the cups in the thrift store, I simply had to take them with me. Especially since they were made in Maastricht. A town in the south of our country, where part of my family lives.

This week I received my first parcel with garden seeds from the UK (several varieties of Sweet Peas, Nigella, Cosmea and Zinnia). Can't wait for spring to arrive and the gardening season to start. Meanwhile I just keep on planning and dreaming. Hopefully, if the weather permits, I can give you an update on the garden soon.

Have a good week!

Love, Madelief x

* The bunting was made by a friend of mine. Please let me know if you are interested.

  2. Darling Madelief,

What a welcome burst of colour your post gives on this dreary grey day here in Budapest. How we love your guest room and we write from first hand experience. To stay there is to feel that one is in a jolly seaside place and one can be a child once more. It is delightful.

The biscuit tin is fabulous and looks so wonderful containing the Hyacinths. Such great inspiration! You have such a perfect creative eye, everything is combined so beautifully. Never a mess, always a joyous riot of colour. A feast for the eyes and all the senses. How well we can imagine the delicious scent which must perfume the air.

Get well soon, dearest friend. Take the greatest of care of yourself. J and L xx

I am so sorry to hear you are once again ill. It is starting to be a rough new year....I pray for your speedy recovery. And my heart aches for the French people, but I admire them...they do NOT take things lying down. VIVE LA FRANCE, and long-live LOVE. Big hugs to you, Anita

  13. Dear Madelief - the vibrancy of the tin with the blue hyacinth is simply stunning.
Poor you, to have had a second dose of the flue - perhaps your doctor could give you an anti flue injection next year. H and I have one each Autumn and, touch wood, it has been years since either of us have caught the flue.

  15. So many pretty things. Pink is what I'm craving during these grey days of January. There's a lot of sickness around this year - I'm just finishing up with my second cold of the season.

  16. I'm sorry to hear that you have had the flu. I keep telling my girls to wash their hands...but really there is nothing that can be done - I just hope our household doesn't get it. I am glad that you are feeling better.

I have a question - only when you have energy/and time to answer...your geraniums. I have started 5 geraniums inside this year (they are special ones from a friend in Denmark) and while they are very happy in the windowsill - they look a little lighter green than I remember and they don't seem as strong as their mother plant was last summer. Do you feed yours anything over the winter?

    Thank you

    1. Dear Lise-Lotte,

Thank you for your kind comment on my blog! I am so sorry I have to disappoint you, but the geraniums on my photo's are fake ones.

I kept some real geraniums inside last winter. They looked exactly the way you described them. I have to say though that when I planted them outside at the end of spring and fed them, they turned into beautiful plants!

      Happy weekend!

  17. Dearest Madelief,
Poor girl, that is no fun and I know what you're talking about. Since Christmas I've been battling on and off bladder infection... Don't want to take any more antibiotics as they nearly overdosed me mid October while I was in the hospital. Guess that's why my immune system now is not responding. One day it will be spring weather again and we can walk outside freely.
So far we have been flu-free since we both take flu shots annually. Since I got paralyzed and Pieter since he had his open heart surgery.
My Mom was very sick with the flu, she's in the hospital and with her being on dialysis that is worse. She also got other problems... Each day is a gift of God!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

Ik wordt echt weer een beetje vrolijker als ik naar jouw heerlijke foto's kijk. Prachtig blik, en die hyacinthen staan er prachtig in... Jouw gasten zullen zich in deze kamer heerlijk thuis voelen...

  32. Madelief, hoping that your flu bug has departed.

Thanks for letting us see this rich mix (not mess) of colors! Yes, that dark blue tin is the perfect container for the beautiful hyacinth blooms. You have reminded me to venture out into the cold January air this week to visit some neighborhood flower shops that usually have some hycinth bulbs on offer in January. I would so like to have a bit of spring promise to look at on my window sill!

  43. Lieve Madelief,

  47. How wonderful these blue hyacinths! I hope you feel better day by day, Madelief. Take a lemon juice cure in the same amount of hot water every morning. Eat also guava, kiwi and broccoli. During convalescence, do not hesitate to make a royal jelly cure. This is one of the richest natural food in trace elements, vitamins and amino acids (proteins). Result : it boosts immunity. I wish you good luck and better health.
